According to ‘Urban Dictionary’ this is one of the definitions of a ‘flashpacker’.
FLASHPACKER
“Similar to the common backpacker in that they also travel alone or in pairs rather than using tours, and carry the eponymous trekking pack; however they typically are in their 30s and 40s with enough income to stay in guesthouses instead of dorm rooms.
They stay for shorter periods of time and are willing to pay for the fastest or most comfortable means of transportation (but not exclusively).
These travellers might be former backpackers who aren’t going to argue over the price of a beer, but still aren’t traveling in luxury.
Also, a derogatory term used by backpackers (who also carry gadgets) to describe someone who no longer feels the romance of sleeping with cockroaches or riding the chicken bus.”
In all honesty, we didn’t consult urban dictionary when choosing our name. Essentially for us we chose it because it summed us up. We choose to travel very minimally, mostly with carry-on luggage only. We achieved seven weeks in the UK and Europe with carry on only!
Typically we stay in average accommodation, but we don’t oppose a private room in a hostel, nor do we oppose to the occasional ‘flash’ room for a night or two on a trip away.
We are in our 40’s and 50’s………… just 😉 !!!!
We definitely prefer to travel together and not in a tour, but do choose to travel in a tour group for a variety of reasons when needed.
We prefer to stay for longer periods of time in one place and love discovering places that the locals attend. We usually hire a small, convenient, economical car, but choose to use public transport when staying in cities.
We love a beer, or a Guinness, or a wine, but definitely prefer a champagne 🙂
